RELATIONSHIPS: Best friend Shinobu Kojika, found family Kouhei Inuzuka and Tsumugi Inuzuka
OCCUPATION: First-year high school student

HISTORY: Kotori is a normal high school girl in modern Japan, and the daughter of a fairly prominent chef and restaurateur. Unfortunately, despite her passion for food and voracious appetite, Kotori starts the series unable to cook much herself; an accident cutting her finger when she was in third grade left her with a strong phobia of kitchen knives. At the start of the series, Kotori’s mother Megumi has started doing appearances on TV to repay a favor to a friend, leaving the restaurant closed and Kotori alone most of the time, especially with lots of last-minute cancellations of plans.

IN-CANON: One day at Flower Viewing, she runs into her recently widowed teacher Kouhei Inuzuka and his preschool daughter Tsumugi. After explaining that her mother stood her up due to her TV work, she gives them a business card for the restaurant. They come in a few nights later when the restaurant is closed, and Kotori awkwardly but successfully makes them clay pot rice. She then asks Sensei and Tsumugi if they’d like to come to the restaurant for dinner more often; the place is empty nowadays, and she can help teach them to cook with her theoretical knowledge (since the two had been living on frozen dinners since Kouhei’s wife died) and he can handle the cutting.
PERSONALITY
ALIGNMENT: Neutral Good
ATTITUDE: Quiet, gentle, polite, enthusiastic about food and cooking, prone to mild freakouts
VIRTUES: Kind, patient, loyal, sincere, humble, polite, insightful, persistent when motivated, brave for others, great with kids, knowledgeable about cooking
VICES: Gluttonous, anxious, "space cadet", bottles up negative emotions, cold-shoulder temper, selectively impulsive
QUIRKS: *Constantly* thinking about food, light stammer when nervous, fiddles with bangs when embarrassed, almost always has a hair tie on hand
LIKES: FOOD, cooking, trying a new recipe, quality time with loved ones
DISLIKES: Kitchen knives, blood, physical pain, having plans canceled, being alone for too long
HOBBIES: Eating, cooking parties with the Inuzukas, going shopping or to the movies with Shinobu
FAVORITE FOOD: Rice, followed closely by seafood
LEAST FAVORITE FOOD: None

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: First impression: quiet. This can be mistaken for aloofness at first glance, since she tends to be reserved with her words to start, but in reality she is a. just awkward about interacting with people, and b. almost constantly daydreaming about food.

Start a conversation about food, though, and she’ll immediately light up and start talking a mile a minute, only barely stopping herself. It's clear food is a BIG part of who she is: she’s nigh-constantly snacking during school, always wanting to investigate new ingredients, and once she gains enough confidence extremely excited at the prospect of tackling a new recipe. She’s also kind and extremely earnest (to the point of bluntness or being a ridiculously transparent liar at times), quickly taking Tsumugi under her wing as a little sister. She can also be very easy to fluster, though, sometimes to the point of comically serious dramatics. But during more serious moments, she can have a simple, gentle wisdom that rarely steers people wrong, often more valuable than she gives herself credit for.

MOTIVATIONS: Food!!! … And more seriously, bonds. The two are deeply intertwined for her. Food is her main love language, cooking together with someone is her favorite bonding activity, and a lot of her knowledge of recipes is tied to strong memories and vice versa. At the start of the series, she feels starved of both good food thanks to her phobia and the bonds she usually has: her mom and the restaurant’s ambience missing due to the TV work favor, and her main friend Shinobu having been sorted into a different classroom in high school and usually busy helping with her three younger siblings at home, and her dad being a VERY infrequent presence in her life since her parents divorced. It’s only after realizing she and the Inuzukas can help each other with their similar problems by cooking together- Kotori with the above, Kouhei and Tsumugi not having a proper family dinner in months since Kouhei’s late wife did all the cooking- that she starts to feel more connected again. She grows to love the Inuzukas like her own family, heals the bonds she has with her mom, Shinobu, and even her dad. She comes into her own as she learns to cook for herself and others, and she slowly becomes more proactive in nurturing her connections with the people around her.

FLAWS: Her main weakness is being a bit stuck in her own head a lot of the time, especially when it comes to her anxieties. She's often a bit lost in her daydreams about food, of course, and sometimes can let her anxiousness get the best of her, like panicking over small details, or mistaking Kouhei's best friend Yagi for someone kidnapping Tsumugi and tailing them to a park instead of... just asking. But more than that, she can have a hard time processing her negative emotions, and it takes a lot of effort for her to voice them instead of bottling them up until they explode. Surprisingly, she also has a bit of an impulsive protective streak as well, such as the incident with Yagi, which leads to her jumping out of the bushes to stop him from handing Tsumugi a "cigarette" (really a paper-wrapped stick of chocolate)... when she has no idea how dangerous this guy is AND her phone is dead so she has no way to call for help.

REGRETS: Her parents’ divorce. Even if it wasn't really her fault. The marriage was already on the rocks before, especially when Megumi took over her late parents’ restaurant and Muneo quit his job as a police officer to take care of Kotori, both without their spouse’s input. But she still carries that feeling of being “the last straw” with her knife accident- since she was trying to surprise them with her dad's favorite dinner of shougayaki to make them happy- even with her parents’ reassurance otherwise, which directly impacts her knife phobia. Not only does she not want to remember the physical pain, but the memory of her parents divorcing make the aversion so strong that it takes years for her to conquer it, despite knowing it'd be a big benefit for herself and her mom if she did. It's not until Kouhei cuts his finger in a later chapter and Tsumugi develops her own fear that Kotori manages to come to terms with her own scar to help the little girl out.

EXTRA: Her raw talent for cooking sets her apart from a crowd. Not only is she able to make AMAZING rice on her first try despite mostly flying by the seat of her pants, she also knows quite a few recipes and tricks just by watching her mom and through memory despite not cooking herself. She can also to diagnose the root of a person’s cooking mistakes easily (like when Kouhei kept overcooking foods because he was wary of undercooking and giving his daughter an upset stomach).

(Also, she got over her squeamishness about contacts because she realized she could eat steaming ramen without having to constantly messing with her glasses.)

REWARDS:

  • Amber Drop Bamboo Grove - Obtained after completing The Legend of Princess Kaguya, planting this amber bead in Kotori's new backyard caused a small grove of mooncake-producing bamboo to spring up.
  • Fish Bowl - Obtained after completing The Little Mermaid. It contains an oyster which produces a large pearl every two weeks, a marimo ball that gives off a soft glow in the dark, and a toy treasure chest to keep them happy.
  • Bird Suncatcher - Obtained after freeing the Index from the Story Eater's sleeping curse. It projects a picture of Kotori eating a meal with her loved ones when held to the light, and when hung over her bed it acts like a dreamcatcher.
  • Magic Staff - Obtained with a Catalogue purchase after A Midsummer Rose. This staff is remarkably similar to the one Kotori wielded in Roxas's dream, including granting her the ability to wield his world's form of magic. See Abilities for more details.
  • Tea Dragon Egg - Obtained with a Catalogue purchase after A Midsummer Rose. This large egg hatched into a cute baby peppermint tea dragon, much like the one she befriended in the story.

REGAINS:

  • N/A for now

MISCELLANEOUS:

  • Wooden Kitchen Knife - A gift from Kazuma to help teach her how to use a knife again. Kotori finally broke it in against the Story Eater's plants engulfing the city, and since then uses it for slicing vegetables.
  • Apron - Free apron from Rokurou after the balsamic fruit incident at the barbecue.
  • Coral Rosebud - Magical coral that grew from Kotori and Roxas acting out a star-crossed love scene in The Little Mermaid. Yup, totally just acting. And Kotori just wanted a souvenir because it’s pretty. Definitely all there is to it.
  • Three Jars of Lavender Honey - Produced by Hunk's Essence powers, this honey can be thrown as a sleep bomb or mixed into tea for a relaxing bedtime drink. Hunk gave Kotori these at the Halloween Faire.
  • Bamboo Necklace - Roxas commissioned this pendant with a stunning blue-green backing, made from materials he's collected throughout the drafts. He gave it to Kotori for their first date.

HISTORY
IN-DEPTH: Bare-bones wiki page.

Kotori is a normal high school girl in modern Japan, and the daughter of a fairly prominent chef and restaurateur. Unfortunately, despite her passion for food and voracious appetite, Kotori starts the series unable to cook much herself. An accident cutting her finger when she was younger left her with a strong phobia of kitchen knives. At the start of the series, Kotori’s mother Megumi has started doing appearances on TV to repay a favor to a friend, leaving the restaurant closed and Kotori alone most of the time. One day, she runs into her recently widowed teacher Kouhei Inuzuka and his preschool daughter Tsumugi. Over the next few years, the trio of cooks lots of delicious food, improve their skills, grow closer as found family.

PERSONALITY
IN-DEPTH: While Kotori is usually reserved and quiet at first glance, she lights up when talking about food and cooking. She’s nigh-constantly snacking during school, always wanting to investigate new ingredients, and (once she gains enough confidence) is extremely excited at the prospect of tackling a new recipe. She’s also kind and extremely earnest (to the point of bluntness or being a ridiculously transparent liar at times), quickly taking Tsumugi under her wing as a little sister. She can also be very easy to fluster, though, sometimes to the point of comically serious dramatics, and anything romantic either goes right over her head or makes her turn red and stammer and squawk for a subject change.

QUIRK IN-DEPTH: None. The enormous appetite and constantly thinking about food? One hundred percent Kotori, no essence required.

ABILITIES
WEAPONS: Magical Donabe (clay cooking pot); Magic Staff; teenage appetite and metabolism

STYLE: Practical, but pacifist (and glitchy)

SKILLS: While Kotori has no magic or physical abilities of her own, she does have an extensive theoretical and growing practical knowledge of cooking, and she's been gifted with a magical cooking pot that can produce limitless porridge and other recipes on command. See below for the donabe's specs and Recipes for what it can make.

In addition, whenever the pot overflows, Kotori's appetite and metabolism increase to be able to consume the spillover.

MAGIC POT SPECS:

  • Looks like a dark brown donabe pot, about 2 quarts, birds and rice stalks painted onto the lid
  • Only takes commands from Kotori
  • Follows Kotori around if she goes more than thirty feet away from it, unless she specifically tells it to stay
  • Can create food if told “cook, Nabe-chan, cook!”, and stops with “stop, Nabe-chan!” (Kotori likes to thank it afterwards, even if it’s not required)
  • Starts out making just sweet rice porridge by default
  • Can make more dishes, but a. the recipe has to have at least one grain-based ingredient (grain, flour, breadcrumbs or panko, miso, grain-based spirits, etc.), b. she has to have made it herself at least once before, and c. she has to have shared that finished product with at least two other people (rule of three symbolism AND echoes her friendship with Inuzuka-sensei and Tsumugi)
  • Not self-cleaning!
  • If anyone else tries to use the pot, it’ll “glitch,” refusing to stop and overflowing the area with food until Kotori turns it off
  • (Sometimes it’ll glitch for Kotori anyway, because it amuses me)

As of The Legend of Princess Kaguya:

  • Food produced by the pot now has mild healing properties (enough to heal superficial injuries, or to settle an upset stomach, or accelerate healing from a cold). Slightly stronger as of The Little Mermaid.
  • Pot can now "learn" any recipe Kotori makes as long as it meets the above requirements, even if pot isn't used when first making it

    As of The Little Mermaid:

  • Pot can transform into different cooking equipment on command, starting with three extra forms: frying pan, ramekin, and tempura pot

STRENGTHS: Talented and knowledgeable cook, kind, protective, sincere, great teacher, good actress once she connects with a role

WEAKNESSES: Phobia of knives and other sharp objects (nearly conquered), athletically average, timid, easily anxious or flustered, adverse to pain (either self or others), prone to stage fright and wooden acting at the start of a scene

HOUSING
LOCATION: On the far end of the commercial district.

APPEARANCE: A cauldron-shaped pub with the second floor serving as a decently-sized apartment.

MISCELLANEOUS DETAILS: Kotori currently lives in the remains of the Thunder, Lightning, and Rain, a pub run by three witch sisters who vanished years ago. Some say the owners left due to a curse left by a disgruntled customer. Others that they had a very bitter falling out and split ways, or they were on the run for skirting business fees. One or two people say they just retired and moved to a villa in Greek Mythology, but nobody believes them. In any case, when Kotori's key led her here, it was deplorable. Rickety furniture and floors, spirit and potion bottles caked in dust and cobwebs, years' worth of dirty dishes in the sink. It took a lot of time and work, but Kotori's managed to make it look livable, even comfortable after some more time. Who knows if it'll be open for business again someday...

Due to a few incidents in her second autumn here, the pub now has a brand new door, featuring a cute set of bells to chime when it opens. There's a similar bell system above a much smaller hole in the root cellar, in case any Fraggles decide to visit. There's also a handwritten sign in one of the windows, decorated with a few doodles of songbirds around the border: "Private Residence, Please Knock! Thank You!"

As of The Legend of Princess Kaguya: The property now features a back yard, just large enough to hold a small, mooncake-generating bamboo grove.

As of The Little Mermaid: The old medieval kitchen has received a cozy Victorian makeover.

As of A Midsummer Rose: The backyard has expanded in size and now features two raised garden beds. Thanks to a Catalogue purchase, the bar and dining area of the restaurant have received an extensive makeover.
